Wow! What a great way to kick-off the year. Over 25 people were in attendance at the first MMA meeting. Thank you all to those who spent their evening with us and I hope everyone is excited for the upcoming school year.
Please keep your eye out for the September MMA Newsletter which will be available in print at the open house tonight and emailed to all families on Friday.
The MMA’s website: will be used to throughout the year to share information, provide links to resources, and other activities. The MMA will also be using the Remind texting service for quick reminders and announcements. Text @mmagroup to 81010 to signup.
The Treasurer reported that we have approximately $11,800 in our account.
Mr. Zott gave a review of upcoming activities, noting that October is going to be a very busy month at Messmore. Tonight, September 15, 2016, is the Open House starting at 6:00pm with a reception for new families at 5:30pm in the Media Center. After a presentation by Mr. Zott, each classroom will have two 20 minute sessions, which will allow families with more than one child an opportunity to get to multiple classrooms.
October 7th will be the Cardboard Challenge. For more information on how this event got started, visit: On October 11th, Chick Moorman will be hosting an event and discussion. More information will be provided and we hope that many parents will attend. This visit is provided by the MMA and at no cost to families.
On October 24th, Messmore will host a UCS Board meeting. This will allow Messmore to showcase our students, teacher, and programs, with a full board meeting to follow that evening.
The always popular Trunk-n-Treat event will be October 28th. This will provide students with a safe and fun trick or treating opportunity and there will be entertainment as well.
Some new committees were announced including the Science Fair, Parents’ Night Out, Bingo Night, and an Ice Cream Social / Student Showcase. Committee signup forms will be at the open house and circulated around the school.
Mrs. Papadelis discussed the upcoming Chick Moorman visit. She has heard Mr. Moorman speak on several occasions and highly recommends his presentations and discussions.
The Entertainment Book fundraiser, which kicked off yesterday, was discussed. This year the decision was made not to send books home automatically and concerns were discussed that this might lead to lower sales. This is a very important fundraiser to get funding for the first half of the year and we hope all families will participate.
Several teachers were present to discuss an initiative that started last year regarding the need for updated Montessori materials in classrooms. The type of equipment used in most classrooms is very long-lasting, but expensive. Some of the materials have been used for 25 years or more and some need to be updated. This led to a great discussion about how the generosity of Messmore families might be channelled into fulfilling the need for these materials. The board appreciates all the ideas discussed and will have further discussions with the teachers and Mr. Zott about how we might accomplish this goal and present ideas at the next meeting in October.
Ms. Masnick brought up the Box Top program and we need to investigate if this program is still active and how she might be able to raise money for her classroom though these efforts.
A discussion was had on the parking lot. We are still in need of a few volunteers, particularly in the afternoon. For the most part, the parking lot has been running smoothly, but there have been a few instances of districted driving nearly leading to accidents. Please use caution going through the lot.
The meeting ended around 7:30pm. The next meeting is planned for October 12th at 6:00pm in the Media Center.
